HONOLULU — Authorities have released the name of a 37-year-old Ewa Beach man who died after he escaped from Honolulu police custody and fell from a bridge.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the cause of Pernell Aio’s death is pending further tests.

Authorities say Aio was in the back of a police vehicle on the H-1 freeway Monday when he broke out of his handcuffs and kicked out a window.

Police say Aio climbed out the window and tried to jump from the Honouliuli Bridge. Police say officers could only hold onto Aio a few seconds before he fell 25 feet.

Aio was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police say Aio was being detained for a medical evaluation after relatives took him to the Kapolei police station.

Police have opened an administrative investigation.
